Joe is a golf reporter. Max 'Hard Way' Mitchell used to be one of the best caddies on the PGA Tour. When Joe is laid-off, and Hardway realizes that with a magical set of golf clubs he is better than anyone on the tour, he convinces Joe to do the seemingly impossible—win the Masters as an amateur.
It takes a while for the novel, which is better marching down fairways than dealing with domestic life, to find its stroke. But once it does, it treats its readers well. An enjoyable modern fable for players and fans alike.
Feel-good ... Though filled with colorful characters and enough hilarious one-liners for a comedy roast, the narrative is overlong and overstuffed with golf lore, and the magical elements are underdeveloped. Still, this has a ton of heart. Golf enthusiasts ought to tee it up.
