The twenty essays and three poems included here adjust that relation: rather than passing through a house on its way to a person, each piece stays put, inspecting the various ways a home—or lack of one; homelessness, vanished houses, and asylums are also examined—shaped its inhabitant, from ancient Rome up to the near-present. The contributors are an eclectic mix ... Less diverse are the destinations themselves, which are entirely Western ... My selfish hope is that others will be inspired to create similar collections focusing on different parts of the world ... Kennedy and Lee pleasingly assert the freedom to consider not only houses, but also house-related themes.

Houses are full of horrors and, in this collection, women experience fewer of their sensual pleasures and more of the drudge ... Not all the writing is skilled. A piece by Alexander Masters is presented as a series of interviews with homeless men and women at a drop-in centre in the south coast town of Eastbourne, a world ripe for illumination. But this essay is dutiful rather than necessary, its subjects reduced to their first names.
