RaveCrime Fiction LoverBlacktop Wasteland captured my attention from the beginning. Cosby writes action as well as anyone. Bug is a engaging protagonist – funny and likeable but clear-headed and impressively good at his work. His conflicts give him a depth that others lack. Beneath its sleek surface Cosby has written a rural noir novel that is also timely and subversive in its portrayal of racism and thew skewering of the American Dream. Believe the hype.
Michael Kardos
RaveCrime Fiction LoverBluff begins as a noirish character piece, and the magic angle is very interesting. The story is held together by Webb, an intriguing and sympathetic protagonist with enough back-story to ensure her decisions carry an emotional weight. The introduction of Ellen changes the book into a heist thriller, but Webb’s first person narration keeps the tone the same throughout, and the change of pace is not at all jarring ... The magic is elevated by something unexpected, something extraordinary. I’m not going to spoil for you Kardos’ final twist, but be assured it elevates a good book in to an excellent one.
Kent Anderson
RaveCrime Fiction LoverGreen Sun is eminently readable. Anderson has a clear, direct style for the most part, but writes with a poetic flourish when appropriate. Hanson’s recollections, or perhaps dreams or flashbacks, of his time in Vietnam have an otherworldly, and often quite beautiful, feel to them ... Both Night Dogs and Green Sun might make you question why anyone would choose such a dangerous profession, but the author draws a distinction between the department itself and the individuals working in it. Green Sun is a brilliant novel in its own right, and a worthy follow up to Night Dogs. Read them both.
Jordan Harper
RaveCrime Fiction LoverWhichever category you choose to assign She Rides Shotgun to – debut novel, chase thriller, hardboiled man-out-of-prison drama, or even twisted coming of age novel – one thing’s for sure: you won’t read many better examples all year ... The novel has a small but well-drawn cast of characters, including the detective investigating Polly’s disappearance, some corrupt law men, and a young woman trapped by Aryan Steel in the way that Nate was so keen to avoid. In fact, Harper’s economical writing style extends the length of the novel ... Having read She Rides Shotgun, it’s no surprise to me that literary crime writers like Megan Abbott and Benjamin Whitmer are queuing up to heap praise on it.
