PositiveIndia Today (IND)\'Contained\' is a word often used to describe Lahiri’s style, her characters trapped in a doomed effort to exert emotional control, to keep wildness at bay. In Italiam, she is even more contained, spare, her self-admittedly limited range (in comparison to her English) perhaps necessarily making her gnomic, aphoristic. But that is probably unfair, to suggest her style in Italian is a result of her limitations rather than her literary skill ... an accomplished effort, a novella-length piece of fiction that reads like a contemporary European novel and not much like Lahiri’s English-language stories and novels.
