An illustrated selection of quotations on cooking and life from the beloved television chef who brought the art of French cooking to American audiences.
For readers looking to become a better cook, or Francophiles seeking company in their appreciation of French culture, there's something for everyone in this collection of quotes ... Illustrations of cooking utensils are featured throughout, adding whimsy to nearly every page ... For lovers of all things Child and appreciators of a clever quip, this is a great read that would be a nice supplemental purchase for larger collections and an ideal gift for foodies.
Fans of Julia Child will appreciate People Who Love to Eat Are Always the Best People, a gift-size book of pithy expressions and short passages from the beloved cooking teacher. The selected quotes reflect Child’s love of French cooking and her high standards in the kitchen, but also her pragmatism and spunk ... Most of the quotes are classic, smile-inducing Julia Child, although some...feel like filler. The book’s spare illustrations seem too dull to accompany Child’s larger-than-life persona. Photos would have been more fitting. The selected quotations delightfully highlight Child’s combination of high and low brow sensibilities ... This book should not serve as an introduction to Julia Child. One needs to imagine these words uttered in her distinctive voice as she towers over a bowl of eggs, whisk in hand. For the many who already love Julia Child, the book will make a gratifying addition to their library.
Child’s words are predictably clever...and even inspiring ... but this is a scanty selection, with fewer than 90 aphorisms, padded with illustrations of kitchen utensils. Remarks...float in space, naked of any context ... encouraging bits of counsel, but they are concepts that have long permeated culinary culture, due in no small part to Child herself ... When Child commands 'Don’t eat meekly!' one wishes this volume reflected that same adventurous spirit.
