A taut, well-written thriller, but this novel is more than that. It is also both a textured examination of the lies people tell to those they love and a reminder that it is never easy to escape the traumas of a troubled childhood ... The pace is crisp, the surprises keep coming, and there are two big ones that readers are unlikely to see coming.
Compulsively readable ... does a terrific job of warning against the assumption that you know a person and their motives just because you’re comfortable in a situation ... While I did guess some of the plot twists, others, including that ending, completely caught me off guard. I really enjoyed how Greene built characters who were relatable despite occasionally being (and even then sometimes at their most) unhinged. This was a page-turner of a domestic thriller that fans of the genre will absolutely want to devour.
Greene leads readers (and his protagonists) down some very twisty avenues of reasoning that abruptly end ... The steadily shocking tone could be more varied, but this stands as an absorbing mystery about who is predator and who is prey.
It’s not uncommon for me to find one character in a story difficult to like, especially in a domestic thriller like this one, but it’s hard to deal with when both the novel’s main characters rub me the wrong way ... This novel contained way too many twists for my taste, and in fact, I lost track of what was actually going on, something I rarely do. It felt as if Mr. Greene was trying too hard to keep the reader from learning the truth, and by the time it was finally revealed, I was too confused to care all that much ... I was also troubled by the novel’s pacing. At just under 300 pages, this is not a book that should crawl by, but that’s exactly what it did. Thrillers are usually fast-paced and action-packed, but that wasn’t the case here. I read page after page where nothing much seemed to happen, only to have the last few very short chapters be filled with too many key details ... The premise was intriguing, but the story itself puzzled and annoyed me. There are a ton of other fantastic thrillers out there, and I urge fans of the genre to skip this one in favor of something more satisfying.
Riveting ...With adroit pacing, Greene reveals the decisions that shaped them both, brought them together, and now jeopardize their future. Shifting perspectives illuminate the gap between how they perceive themselves and how they view each other. Despite a rushed climax, fans of domestic suspense will be well satisfied.
