At times in the book the certainty with which the authors enter Turner’s consciousness and represent his vision may trouble some readers. How do they know what they know? How did Nat, or Jeremiah? This book requires respect for both the critical craft of history, and for faith, at least the roots of its traditions ... Downs is a superb, even lyrical writer.
Though methodically researched and richly informative, several opening chapters read as schema... rather than a full portrait. This is a problem endemic to the subject, Nat ... The authors leave future citizens, historians, and activists resources for developing new hope-sustaining practices and novel models of the world remade.
Remarkable ... The authors provide exceptionally informed and persuasive commentary on the religious milieu in which Turner took on his prophetic role ... A profoundly insightful analysis of a controversial figure and the rebellion he led.
