Witty, engaging and full of magnificent love stories, It Had to Be You is another resounding success from Georgia Clark ... The couplings in It Had to Be You are wonderfully diverse and well-rounded ... It is highly ambitious, and there are few authors who could take five couples and two wedding planners and create anything but disaster. But even this is not saying enough, because Clark revels in disaster. The messy, gray-area 'how did I end up in this situation?' occurrences of life are her playground, and here she takes every diverse coupling, professional nightmare and swoon-worthy love story in her arsenal and creates something deeply joy-filled, tender, sexy and charming. The world is full of love stories—some short, some lifelong, some out-of-this-world—but whatever your poison, Clark has something unforgettable for you here.
Clark creates a quilt of diverse love stories, overlapping and meandering warmly throughout New York City ... each story Clark tells packs an emotional punch, but Savannah's and Liv's respective relationships, as well as their own evolution to friends and colleagues, are standouts.
... reads like a love letter to New York-set rom coms. Full of immersive details, rich characters, and great banter, Clark’s latest...perfectly balances sweetness and an edge of realism that will draw readers in.
... [an] entertaining story of friendship and second chances ... Liv and Savannah’s eventual friendship is sweet, albeit too good to be true ... Alternating between the five budding couples, Clark delivers a humorous, poignant story about rebuilding after tragedy. Though the tidy ending is a touch saccharine, the appealing characters will draw readers in.
Clark works hard to build a diverse cast of characters, but with upward of eight points of view and a swirl of subplots, there isn't much room for in-depth character development ... In spite of everything, though, Clark's prose is engaging, her characters are likable, and the plot moves quickly enough that the shortcomings can be overlooked. This overstuffed love story is a fun bit of escapism, but it doesn't dig deep.
