Ward tackles this imposing topic with the same cerebral but conversational style he uses on NPR's Fresh Air ... A few mundane side trips notwithstanding, Ward's vivid anecdotes make the book more fun to read than 98 percent of tomes with 'history' in their title.
[Ward] excels at identifying the defining moments in music history through small stories that make up the larger narrative ... Weighty issues aside, The History of Rock & Roll is most of all about telling intimate stories that shaped the music and revealing the threads that connect them...delivers a masterful and distinctive synthesis that is very much Ward’s own ... In the unceasing rush of engaging storytelling, it’s easy to miss a few points at which Ward makes questionable assertions or appears to ignore some recent music scholarship...But in a book this far-ranging, with its bounty of narrative delights and historical insights, these are minor quibbles.
Ward is briskly informative about such economic and technological influences on the birth and growth of rock 'n' roll, including how World War II scuttled the record industry with shellac shortages and brought Southerners north to get factory jobs ... The most casual fans of early rock 'n' roll might thus wonder why Buddy Holly’s 1959 death in a plane crash moves him out of this history so swiftly that his career and life feel even shorter than they were, or why Presley’s budding relationship with the 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu gets paragraphs when a couple sentences would suffice. Mostly, however, Ward doesn’t put in or leave out too much, and his geographical shifts are well-timed.
Ward’s writing is deeply researched, but conversational in tone. He nerds-out just the right amount, moving briskly from hit to hit and craze to craze, slowing down only to impart a few choice anecdotes ... favors facts over drama, but that shouldn’t suggest that the book is a snooze. Rather, Ward’s faithful documentation of the genre’s more obscure corners helps to point out that, early on, rock was weird.
