Unsparing ... An unusual book that is compelling and beautifully written, albeit confusing at times ... If the story gets lost now and then, each narrative is intriguing, and the characters are all fully realized human beings.
Other than the grimly vivid description of near-starvation during the Hunger Winter of 1944-45, there’s a lack of intensity to both the wartime and contemporary storylines, connected though they are by themes of lost fathers, heritage, and mental burdens.
