Can routine family life, can tedium itself, be made interesting and sympathetic if you pay close enough attention to it? The answer, on the basis of this fine novel, is a resounding yes. Markovits delivers an engrossing inquiry into the nature of familiarity: family stories and code words, special places in the old neighborhood, cherished holiday rituals. Though the Essinger siblings are anything but quiet, a quiet sadness pervades this account of holiday homecoming, and of their entry into early middle age. The novel forms a post-mortem of the happy childhood and the faint sense of anticlimax that millennials carry in its aftermath. With attentive and intelligent sympathy, Markovits digs beneath Tolstoy’s dictum about happy families to raise the question, What is family happiness? ... Right down to its random-seeming ending, Christmas in Austin is aggressively inconclusive ... For what is family, after all, but a conversation that never ends?

Momentous events do occur – loved ones die and relationships collapse – but their consequences are subsumed into the open-ended dramatic irresolution. Spending time with the Essingers is at once a pleasure and a chore – and in that sense Markovits’s novel has persuasively recreated the kind of family occasion to which most of us submit at this time of year.
Austin is very present in this novel. Markovits describes its freeways and shopfronts, its changing neighbourhoods and residents with care ... The characters of sisters Susie and Jean, who have both 'settled' – one for her children and another for a new boyfriend – feel less developed than those of Paul and Nathan, whose careers and hopes and dreams get huge amounts of narrative attention. This poses problems for the reader: I found myself caring less and less about the underdeveloped characters, and irritated by the self-importance of the overdeveloped ones. Though the novel is intricately, intimately written, with some wonderful prose and delicate dialogue, it suffers from an uneven pace and doesn’t work hard enough to keep the reader invested in the Essingers’ privileged lives.
The omniscient narrator is deep inside the heads of 14 [characters]—the nursing baby gets a pass—convincingly and insightfully tracking the micromovements of emotions, relationships, and conversations. The Austin setting is remarkably granular as well, including myriad geographic details and street names, restaurant and Christmas tree vendor recommendations, capturing the ethos of the town with confident panache ... For readers who value detailed observation of human nature and those who'd like to visit Austin without springing for plane fare.
