PositiveThe Washington PostAn apt title, as so many of the fantasies are rooted in being desired, hungered for, catered to and pleasured in ways that are presumably lacking in the letter writers’ lives. But some of the most daring letters address emotional as well as physical desires ... There is plenty of humor, light and spark in this book. And there are wildly creative leaps from narrative storytelling to imagined production design and some seriously detailed fantasy casting.
V (formerly Eve Ensler)
PositiveThe Washington PostA reflection on the personal, an overview of the professional and a reminder of the political, all with undertones of grief, vulnerability and later-in-life perspective ... Unfortunately, V’s conclusions and solutions can sometimes feel vague, overly upbeat — or frankly unrealistic. And although her perspective consistently radiates from the personal to the global, times have changed. Does the world really need another older White woman... speaking on behalf of communities we are not a part of? ... This book comes across as more of a historical documentation of action than a solutions-based pathway to making change. Perhaps that’s part of V’s reckoning, too.
Whitney Goodman
PositiveThe Washington PostGoodman’s writing is straightforward and firm but full of empathy and gentle guidance, exactly what you’d want from any therapist, Instagram or no ... Goodman convincingly demonstrates that toxic positivity isn’t new. In fact, she shows that it’s long been woven into almost every aspect of American culture from this country’s earliest days and is, in many ways, our national religion ... Goodman does a good job of zooming out to bigger overarching truths, countering beliefs about how much control we actually have when it comes to living a 100 percent positive life ... This is the rare self-help book where readers might recognize themselves as both victim and perpetrator ... More than a self-help book, this is a society-help book. It’s ambitious but based on the simple idea of being, as Goodman describes herself, \'radically honest\' with each other.
