MixedThe Historical Novel SocietyThe novel’s first third jumps back and forth between the two women, providing their backgrounds and personalities, and I found this part low-key and largely unnecessary. I didn’t get into the story and start caring about the characters until the women put their lives on the line with their involvement in the Comet Line and SOE. Later, after both are arrested, Violette is interrogated, and they are shipped off to Ravensbrück, where they hold onto their humanity and sanity through courage and resistance. This part was raw and brought tears to my eyes. However, I question the author’s choice of using first-person narrative, since it didn’t bring the characters closer for me.

RaveThe Historical Novel Society... a fast-moving, intense, and plot-driven story filled with a large cast of colorful characters with their own motivations and histories, who eventually all come together. When they do, they resolve their internal conflicts, their communal fear, and the external battle of fighting off the Nazis on their own to regain control of their homes and become stronger. I felt for the characters and their struggles and celebrated their uprising with them. Inspired by a true uprising, From These Broken Streets is an entertaining and engaging read.

PositiveHistorical Novel SocietyAs a fan of The Crown, I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Royal Governess, which took me back even further into the life of the royal family and fueled my inner gossipy side with fascinating insights and tidbits. For anyone who is curious like me, The Royal Governess is an interesting must-read.
