PanLibrary JournalUnfortunately, this latest work from Kelly (The Great Mortality) focuses on the war in Europe but doesn’t consider the global implications and includes numerous errors and jarring statements throughout, some more forgivable than others ... Moreover, Kelly writes that slain Nazi soldiers were \'assembled in the snowy fields... summoned to Valhalla,\' the mythological Norse hall of warriors killed in battle, thus glorifying men who perpetrated some of the worst atrocities in history. Errors and awkward prose mar a work that could have otherwise been acceptable. Not recommended.
David Stahel
PositiveLibrary JournalWhile firmly in the camp of operational military history, this present work still includes related elements that impacted the German war effort, including the influence of the American entry into the war on German soldiers’ psyches, combined with the scarcity of food, usage of drugs and alcohol, the soldiers’ sexuality, and the treatment of prisoners of war, both German and Soviet. Hitler’s oversight remains an overarching theme ... A solid analysis of the 1941–42 winter campaign, this work should appeal to readers interested in operations on the World War II’s eastern front.
Geoffrey Wawro
PositiveLibrary Journal\"An excellent analysis of American\'s involvement in World War I. Recommended for anyone interested in U.S. military history.\
Craig L. Symonds
RaveLibrary JournalSymonds...has not simply provided a narrative history of naval warfare during World War II but also meticulously analyzed its various aspects ... An overarching theme is the U.S. ability to manufacture vessels faster than German and Japanese forces could sink them ... A scholarly yet extremely accessible work that will be of value to anyone interested in World War II; this will likely be a new standard on the topic.
John Lehman
MixedLibrary JournalLehman\'s work reads more like personal memoirs of his time as secretary of the navy during the Reagan years. Based on his former position, his latest work has a bias in favor of 1980s Republicans and the Reagan administration. Lehman dismisses Democrats and \'leftists\' while praising favored colleagues ... For anyone studying the late Cold War, although the favoritism can be a turn-off for anyone who isn\'t a staunch Reagan supporter.
George C Daughan
PositiveLibrary JournalDaughan provides a patriot-centric view, emphasizing bravery among the colonial militia and the British redcoats\' brutality. British soldiers bayoneted a number of patriots, including the wounded, but the rebels treated captured British stragglers well. The maps are useful but could have been more detailed ... Overall, this sound, accessible history is geared toward general audiences, but it will also appeal to military historians and Revolutionary War enthusiasts.
