He speaks clearly and honestly of his \'past,\' as he refers to his bout of depression ... The Farmer’s Son resonated with me ... I found it comforting, gentle and just a good read. I hope you like it too.

PositiveThe MissourianThe real crux of the story is: what is freedom? What does it mean to be free? The book drags a bit in the middle but the writing is elegant and the characters plausible. The author does not digress or meander into irrelevancy. He gives a view of rural and urban life that is accurate and describes the unrest and unease that is upon the country; this unrest will erupt, as we know, into the Civil War. I recommend Up From Freedom, for those who like history. I didn’t know much of about this period in history and the book piqued my curiosity. This is a novel for those who like to wrestle with the big questions of life—about freedom, the morally right things to do, and becoming a better human being.
