RaveBook OxygenMa’s vivid prose does a fine job of evoking Candace’s remote point-of-view, whether before or after cataclysm ... its critique of capitalism, done slyly yet tellingly, is a central ingredient in her fusion of narrative themes ... All of it adds up to a remarkable package, thought-provoking and compelling, as it ricochets between the familiar and the unexpected. Most memorable, though, are the scenes of New York, emptying invisibly as its population migrates or fades away.
Arif Anwar
Ravebookoxygen[The Storm] blows a gust of ocean freshness through the predictable ranks of historical epics. Both for its lyrical prose and its intricate structure, the novel offers engagement and intrigue. There’s range here, originality, and a pleasing avoidance of melodramatic predictability ... Anwar works hard to avoid cliché, and often succeeds ... intelligence and empathy mark this first foray into fiction by Bangladeshi-born, Toronto-based Anwar. His novel is strikingly ambitious, but also persuasive and immersive. He’s one to watch.
