An exposé of our treatment of immigrants and the fallout from globalization, this story of 500 foreign workers from India lured here under false pretenses and entrapped in near slavery conditions is told by a labor leader who devised a plan that would ultimately win these men citizenship.
... a must-read for anyone organizing a union drive across cultural or racial lines, but even readers who have never thought about labor issues before will find themselves sucked into the drama ... Soni does a good job of keeping the focus on the workers. He reveals just enough of himself to help us understand how he managed to persuade the men to trust him ... The one quibble I have with “The Great Escape” is its failure to grapple with the thorniest question at the center of this saga: Should these Indian workers have been brought to the United States in the first place?
